Unstable soil is dangerous, especially when something so crucial, like a highway, is built on top of it.
This is why it is essential to closely monitor the soil in embankments along highways. By doing so, subsidence and potential landslides that could endanger the safety of road users, can be prevented.
Thanks to real-time measurements of soil tension, Geo-data specialist Fugro can quickly provide insights into changes in soil conditions. For this project, two measurement trenches were installed at four locations, with sensors placed at depths of 1, 2, and 3 metres below the surface. Continuous measurements were conducted over a period of 2 to 4 weeks to optimise calculations for embankment stability.
These real-time measurements are only possible thanks to smart sensors and a compatible sensor module. Our Reporter helped Fugro complete this task quickly and effectively. Combined with Watermark soil moisture tension sensors, Reporter was used to monitor the embankments along the A10 near Nieuwe Meer in Amsterdam. This project demonstrates how simple and effective it is to ensure infrastructure safety using modern technology.
The plug-and-play functionality of Reporter allowed engineers to easily install the sensors, giving them immediate access to critical data. This ensures the safety of the infrastructure remains intact.
