Monitoring concentration variations is key when monitoring water quality in open water, rivers, canals, sewers and overflows, tanks, silos, or basins. The Tentacle sensors by Olpas allow you to easily measure concentrations, and they are designed for professional use in a wide range of environments. You can measure TSS, SSC, MLSS, and more.
Now Crodeon-compatible for user-friendly, real-time monitoring using Reporter, our plug & play sensor module!
Olpas, made compatible by Crodeon
At Crodeon we like to combine our strengths with industry-leading sensor manufacturers. Olpas' reliable Tentacle product range is a collection of concentration measurement instruments to measure Total Suspended Solids (TSS), Mixed Liquor Suspended Solids (MLSS), Suspended Sediment Concentration (SSC, or sediment loads) or Dry Solids (%DS).
The Olpas Tentacle product range is fully waterproof as it was designed to operate fully or partially submerged in water. Contact with water on the ultrasonic window is enough to perform a measurement. The sensor is perfect for water monitoring in open waters (rivers, hydro-dams, canals), in sewers and overflows and in water treatment processes.
Measurement of suspended solids in water
Tracking TSS concentration (Total Suspended Solids) is crucial for gaining valuable insights into water quality evolution. Additionally, it serves as an alarm system for breakthroughs or overflows.
Measuring suspended sediment concentration
SSC (Suspended Sediment Concentration) measuring on the other hand, helps to understand various environmental and ecological dynamics in hydro-dams, rivers and canals.
Crodeon Cloud
When combining a TSS measurement instrument with Reporter, the sensor automatically becomes cloud-connected. Reporter comes with a built-in SIM card and sends all its measuring data to the cloud (Crodeon Dashboard) in real-time using the cellular data network. This makes the system perfect for remote monitoring in the toughest of places.
The Crodeon Dashboard is the place where you can adjust any measurement and alarm settings of your liking, such as configuring alarm thresholds of your total suspended solids sensor and changing your measurement interval. Alarm notifications can be sent through email, text message or by voice call. All live measurement data is available 24/7, and historical measurements get logged and saved. A simple .csv export to Excel allows you to view all your historical data.
TSS sensor with API
Reporter comes with a REST API that you can easily integrate into your own systems to automate processes. Any sensor connected to Reporter, like a total suspended solids probe, automatically becomes API-connected thanks to user-friendly Crodeon technology.
How to install a SSC and TSS sensor
Olpas sensors can be chain mounted, fixed mounted (using a bracket), or installed in a guiding tube. Make sure the sensor can easily be removed for seasonal maintenance. Flexible power* options (battery pack and grid power) allow for easy installation.
Apart from submersible sensors, Olpas offers a range of Crodeon-compatible sensors for inline installations.
*Our solar power option is incompatible with the Olpas Tentacle sensors.
Maintenance of a total suspended solids probe
Due to low power consumption and low maintenance requirements, the Olpas sensors provide an economical solution for accurate TSS monitoring and SSC monitoring (sediment load monitoring) in challenging environments.
The sensors feature advanced (bio)fouling resistance, eliminating the need for fault-prone mechanical wipers, and resulting in an exceptional drift resistance.
Temporary drying of the sensor will not cause damage, and the sensor will automatically resume operation upon contact with water. However, frequent drying of the ultrasonic window will shorten the maintenance interval due to strong adhesion of dirt residues.
Dirt can be cleaned off with a soft sponge, cloth, or tissue and mild cleaning products if needed.

Turbidity is an optical property that describes how particles in a fluid scatter and absorb light, typically measured using a turbidity sensor in NTU (Nephelometric Turbidity Units). Olpas sensors, however, are based on ultrasonic technology and are not affected by optical changes. As a result, they cannot directly measure NTU or serve as a turbidity sensor.
Turbidity is often used as an indirect indicator of suspended solids (TSS or SSC), a relationship sometimes referred to as turbidity suspended solids correlation. In dynamic or challenging environments (such as open waters, hydro-dams, wastewater treatment or sewers), optical measurements can become unreliable, and a direct ultrasonic measurement of suspended solids offers better accuracy.
In summary: If you specifically need to measure NTU with a turbidity sensor, Olpas sensors are not suitable.
However, if your focus is on monitoring suspended solids - where TSS turbidity correlation is important - Olpas' direct measurement technology provides a more robust and reliable solution.
