At the vineyard of Wijnkasteel Vandeurzen, temperatures are monitored every year during the frost season, when new shoots begin to appear on the vines. These four to five weeks are critical for the vineyard, as frost-damaged buds can significantly impact the harvest and reduce wine production.

Peaceful nights thanks to modern technology

The vineyard manager explains how frost monitoring works today and how it differs from several years ago.

“In the past, I would set my alarm for 1 a.m. and check the weather data from nearby stations online. Then I’d head out to the vineyard to inspect the on-site thermometers and, if needed, light the fire pots. I’d be busy all night long.
Since 2018, we've been using Reporter as a frost detection system to monitor temperatures in the vineyard. Now, I only get a wake-up call if it’s actually too cold in the vineyard, allowing me to take action only when necessary. I can sleep soundly, without having to sacrifice my rest.
Reporter is worth every penny, even if we only use the frost monitoring system for a short period each year.”

Reporter: the IoT datalogger with ultimate ease of use

Reporter is our sensor module for remote monitoring. This device was designed to be easy to install and can be used by anyone, without the need for a technical background.

Measurements are transmitted live to the Crodeon Dashboard (our cloud platform), where you can view data in real time. All data is also logged, making it easy to carry out comparative studies using data from previous years. Reporter connects to the internet via 2G/4G/5G (mobile network) and relies on either its own solar panel or the power grid for electricity. With its IP67 rating, Reporter can be safely installed outdoors, even in the rain.

Monitoring grapevines

Grape plants prefer slightly dry soil without too much moisture. Their leaves also don’t cope well with prolonged dampness, which increases the risk of fungal diseases like mildew.

To protect your vines from fungal infections, it may be useful to monitor leaf wetness using a leaf wetness sensor like the Phytos 31.

Frost monitoring: reap the rewards!

Still looking for a system to protect your vineyard during frosty nights? Reporter has got you covered! Feel free to get in touch if you have any questions.
